HUGO BURNAND

Born in Cannes, France, in September 1963, Hugo Burnand first learned to develop and print photographs on the kitchen table at home with his stepmother, photographer Ursy Burnand.

As a child, Hugo attended Cheam School — approximately 15 years after King Charles III — and then Harrow School, approximately 75 years after Cecil Beaton. He received a camera for his seventh birthday and won his first photography competition during his time at Cheam.

In 1993, Hugo began a long relationship with Condé Nast, predominantly working with one of its flagship titles, Tatler. During this time, he photographed a wealth of eclectic and iconic figures, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev, Baroness Thatcher, Lucian Freud, Victoria Beckham, Boy George, John F. Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, amongst many others.

In 2005, Hugo was invited to photograph the wedding of the then Prince of Wales to Camilla Parker Bowles, and was the official portrait photographer for the Prince’s 60th and 70th birthdays. In 2011, it was his pleasure to photograph the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton. The Royal Family confirms that Hugo has photographed Their Majesties both privately and officially for more than 20 years.

In 2015, Hugo had the great honour of being awarded a Royal Warrant by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. In 2023, he notably captured the official Coronation portraits of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, taken in the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace following the Coronation Service.

In 2024, Hugo received a new Royal Warrant from His Majesty King Charles III, and today Hugo Burnand Photography holds the Royal Warrant By Appointment to HM The King as Photographer.
